The cable, which landed in the shores of Lagos today, is said to have the capability of also creating six million jobs within the same period.

Google landed the cable with its partner WIOCC, a prominent African digital backbone company.

The state-of-the-art Equiano subsea cable will become a critical element in meeting Nigeria’s current and future international connectivity demands.

Speaking at the landing site in Eleguishi, Lekki Lagos, Director, Google West Africa, Juliet Ehimuan said: “Google is committed to supporting Africa’s digital transformation and we are excited to see the impact of the landing of Equiano in Nigeria.

“We’ve worked with established partners and in-country experts to guarantee that Equiano has the greatest potential effect in Nigeria and throughout Africa.

“Equiano is set to make an enduring contribution towards the development of Nigeria’s communications infrastructure and today marks another major step in its development.

“We look forward to honouring our commitment to be part of Africa’s digital transformation,” Ehimuan added.

Economic value

She also boasted that the cable, when it begins first phase of capacity spread in the country, will make economic impact by boosting GDP by USD 10.1 billion by 2025 and job creation by 1.6 million by 2025.

It will also make connectivity impact by increasing internet speeds by a factor of six, reducing internet retail prices by 21 percent and increasing internet penetration by six percentage points.

Chief Executive Officer of WIOCC, Chris Wood, also said: “We are proud to have been selected by Google as the landing partner for the Equiano cable in Nigeria, landing the cable directly into the OADC Lagos data centre.

“From there it will be extended to other data centres across Lagos.

“The Equiano cable will deliver improved internet quality, speeds and affordability to the people of Nigeria.

“However, for the benefits to be fully felt throughout Nigeria, hyperscale connectivity needs to be extended from the Lagos area to the rest of the country. To make this happen, WIOCC is also deploying a comprehensive, hyperscale national fibre network, in partnership with Phase3 telecom.

“The network will go live in phases, starting in June and continuing through to the end of the year.

“When combined with the Equiano cable this network will deliver transformational benefits across the country.”

Olaudah Equiano

The Equiano cable was named after Nigerian-born writer and abolitionist, Olaudah Equiano.

The cable ran Portugal in western Europe, through more than 12,000km along the West Coast of Africa and initially landed in Lomé, Togo and now in Lagos, Nigeria.

It will also move to Swakopmund, Namibia; Rupert’s Bay, Saint Helena and Melkbosstrand, South Africa; establishing a valuable new high-capacity connection between the African continent and Europe.

Google says with a design capacity roughly 20 times larger than any other cable currently serving the region, the Equiano subsea internet cable will have a direct impact on connectivity, resulting in faster internet speeds, reduced internet prices and improved user experience in Nigeria.

MKO Abiola’ son declares for 2023 presidential race

Kola Abiola, eldest son of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, has declared his intention to contest for the 2023 presidential election under the platform of People’s Redemption Party, PRP.

He disclosed this on Thursday while being formally accepted by the national chairman, Falalu Bello, at the PRP National Secretariat in Abuja.

“Today makes my formal inroad after 27 years back into politics”, just as he said that the only party that could give the youth such opportunity to make their number count was the PRP.

“I came back into politics through the PRP for some good reasons. “I have gone back to the history of Nigeria to look at the party that truly represents Nigeria. I have gone back and I have found out that the oldest living party is the PRP, it still holds those ideals of what Nigeria and democratic practice should be like.

“It is a party that started by the people and truly for the people. It is a party that has showed first, as its priority, internal democracy.

“I have come back to PRP to show Nigerians that not too long ago, we did things in the right way and the new entities that have come together nowadays forget that there was Nigeria that did things right.

“I am one that believes in an equal opportunity employer be it employment, be it business, equally in politics and I believe this party represents all of these.

“Everybody should have equal opportunity irrespective of age, religion and ethnicity and that is represented here.”

Abiola who raised concerns over the low participation of youths into politics, said “We have a youth population that has been caught out of the system, the political process.

“The first thing I want to do is to disrupt the political process, to disabuse the minds of the youth on godfatherism.

“The way to do this is to give the true owners of Nigeria, that is, the 18 to 36 years age group that make up over 75 per cent of the population an opportunity for their voice to be heard and their numbers to count.”

On his part, Bello said “I formally welcome you into our fold. Your antecedents speak volumes”.

"Woman, thou art loosed! (Luke 13:12)

You have a right to say no.

It is your right to be tired.

You can put your hands in the air,

Cry for help if you have to;

Say no even if the world can't reason with you.

Because, in the grave they still will not.

Don't wait untill death comes,

In anticipation for a pity party.

Death is the end of hope.

Are you hoping he would come to love you and respect you,

stop mentally ,emotionally and physically abusing you?

If you die, that's where hope ends.

Call for help, nobody is a saint .

We are all work in progress.

Are you a perfectionist and you want the world to keep seeing the perfect side of you?

Stop playing God.

Kumuyi Urges Deeper Life Members To Embrace Use Of Television, Technology, Others

                  PASTOR W. F. KUMUYI

THE General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, Pastor William Kumuyi, has called on his followers to embrace the use of television, radio, social media and other technological inventions for the propagation of the Gospel.

The octogenarian preacher lamented that ‘wicked people’ are using the provisions of technology to advance their agenda, hence, the church cannot continue ‘sleeping’ but must ‘wake up’ and use the same technology for Gospel’s sake.

The 80-year-old church leader spoke in a video uploaded yesterday via Facebook by the Ekiti State chapter of the church.

In the five-minute and 16-second video, Kumuyi regretted that the church was a latecomer in taking advantage of technological tools.

“Why are you the latecomer, why are you the one to be the last to use all these things that the people are using to make the world worse, we are going to rise up.

“Anything at the disposal of the people that are doing evil, we are going to take it away from them and use it for the propagation of the gospel. Let your NO be changed to YES,” he declared.

Earlier, Kumuyi, whose church members were known to detest television, and other gadgets, said, “People are getting new methods and they are doing evil. These are the last days and evil is growing worse because people go beyond using their natural strengths, natural technology, they use telephones, they use the media, they use all these connections, the Zoom and all these things to expand the evil they are doing.

“If those messengers of Satan are using the present-day technology and they are expanding, how about you? You will use those things available; they are not only available for messengers who do evil, they are available for the people that are doing good. You will use them.

“The church has been asleep. When radio began some years ago, people didn’t understand how voices would be coming out of a radio, and so the church at that time said, ‘No, we cannot use radio, there is something there that is magical, that is demonic, voice coming out from just a gadget?’ The church said no. Then, the people of the world began to use the radio. Then the church woke up.

“When television came, somebody somewhere performing drama, they see him on the screen and then the church said, ‘This is evil, these are the last days, look at them, bringing pictures on the screen and whatever they are doing somewhere’. And the church said, ‘No, we are not going to use that’ but later they woke up and they are now using the television.

“But now the church is waking up and we are seeing that that thing (technology) is to spread the gospel, for the word of God gets everywhere. We will be wiser than the people of the world. The Lord will wake us up.”

Kumuyi, who had been criticised last September for using a private jet and limousine to a crusade in Abuja, said, “Some people, when the aeroplane came, some people said, ‘We are not doing to use aeroplane’ and they were riding on horses. The bicycle came and they said. ‘God has given us legs and if He has given us legs, why are we going to use bicycles?’

“Motorcycles came, car came and when the aeroplane came, they said, ‘God has given us the land; He has not given us the space and so all those people who are using aeroplane are worldly, are going to go to hell’. I am telling you what they said in those days but now, all those people, aeroplane has silenced them and now they can go anywhere.”
